Norm Smith Elected President of Lutheran Men in Mission

OMAHA, Neb. (ELCA) -- Norman L. Smith, Leawood, Kan., was elected Aug. 1 to a three-year term as president of Lutheran Men in Mission (LMM), the men’s ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Delegates to LMM’s Eighth Assembly elected four officers and nine regional representatives to the LMM board of directors to three-year terms. LMM’s assembly brought 101 delegates here from across the ELCA to conduct the organization’s business July 31-Aug. 1.

Smith, 69, succeeded Heber Rast, Cameron, S.C., who completed his second three-year term as LMM president and was ineligible for re-election. Smith is a parish ministry associate of the ELCA Central States Synod, specializing in men’s ministry at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Overland Park, Kan.

"Aren’t we done with the missional church?" This question was asked by a well-meaning colleague. Well, if we are done with being church, then we should be done with missional church.

Being “church” and being “missional” define each other. Growing in our understanding of this is the primary focus for our synod and it is a long-term initiative. Missional churches see themselves as being sent. This sense of being sent on God’s mission permeates everything – worship, witness, teaching, serving, ministry in daily life. These churches try to understand how they are caught up in God’s intent for the world. [READ MORE]

HUNGER UPDATE

I doubt there is an American who wouldn't want to help the hungry if they understood the problem.

Who should help? Church or government? Christians have always had compassion for and helped the hungry from the very beginning of Christianity. Just when governments started helping seems to be unknown but today we need all the help we can get to do this. We also need good stewardship by all including the hungry and all the effort the hungry can put forth. What ever happened to all the gardens people used to have? The Canadians still have them.

At least 25,000 people die every day in other countries of hunger-related causes. Some dig for food in garbage dumps. [READ MORE]
