Job Opening

Position:                               Administrative Assistant (part-time)

Location:                              Immanuel Lutheran Church ELCA, 1700 Westport Road, Kansas City, MO 64111

Hours worked per week:    25

Days worked:                      9 am – 2:00 pm, Monday through Friday (some flexibility)

Hourly wage:                       $15.00

Reports to:                           Pastor

Works closely with:             Church office volunteers, lay volunteer leaders, Treasurer, Building Manager

                                             and Ministry Associate


  • Office Management

    • Responsible for phones, copier, subscriptions, office and worship supplies

    • Handle office mail and email

    • Provide support to treasurer in an accounts-payable role

    • Maintain Shepherd’s Staff membership database, Constant Contact email database, and church directory

    • Maintain professional appearance of the church office

    • Attend weekly staff meeting

  • Liaison to Congregation and Community

    • Meet and greet visitors, answer phone calls and take messages

    • Have a basic knowledge of the activities and services of the church and provide requested information to visitors and callers whenever possible

    • Offer information and referral aid to those in need. Maintain a referral list of organizations and addresses to offer individuals seeking financial aid, food, etc.

  • Communications

    • Compile and publish the monthly newsletter, The Parish News

    • Prepare and send Constant Contact emails to the congregation

    • Prepare/post Facebook events

    • Maintain and update website on regular, on-going basis

    • Keep church-wide Google calendar up to date

    • Prepare bulletins for weekly Sunday worship, funerals, weddings and special services

    • Develop other flyers, posters, brochures, etc. as needed

  • Facility Coordination and Scheduling

    • Schedule all events, for congregation and community/outside groups

    • Ensure the smooth, safe and efficient use of the building in close communication with the Building Manager


Qualifications and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent and minimum 2 years’ experience in secretarial and administrative tasks, preferably in a congregational-setting.

  • Strong people skills: warm, friendly and helpful on the phone and in person

  • Excellent communications skills, verbal and written

  • Self-starter who can work independently without direct supervision and meet deadlines

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and Publisher, and internet applications. Familiarity with website builder system and Constant Contact a plus.
