I cordially invite you to attend the 21st annual convention of the Central States Synodical Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, July 25-27, 2008 at the Clarion Hotel in Springfield, Mo. The theme for this year’s gathering is “Baptized-Blessed-Believers.”

Baptized-Blessed-Believers

...are gathering in Springfield. Missouri, July 25-27, 2008, for the 21st annual convention of the Central States Women of the ELCA. Denise Smith (photo at left) from Alaska, will represent the churchwide board of the Women of the ELCA at this convention. Gather a carload of women and head to Springfield this summer! See you there!

Denise B. Smith was elected to the executive board of Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America in July 2002, and was elected to a second term in July 2005. She is a member of the finance and budget committee.

Denise feels blessed to have been called to serve on the churchwide board. She has been involved in the church in a variety of ways over the years, including serving as a congregational unit president, synodical president, Sunday school teacher, confirmation mentor, and synod council member. One of her great joys is volunteering for Vacation Bible School every year.

Denise has volunteered in her community with Mary Magdalene, Lutheran Social Services, the Anchorage school district, the American Diabetes Association, and as a fast-pitch softball coach. She has conducted stress reduction/humor therapy workshops—“And God made Laughter”—for the Alzheimers Association and cancer support groups.

As a registered nurse in the Outcomes Improvement Department of Providence Alaska Medical Center, Denise is currently working in a clinical specialist role. She facilitates and problem solves a variety of clinical projects to ensure a safe environment for both patients and staff. The mission statement of her workplace calls Denise to be involved in the healing ministry of Jesus, which she does gladly.

She and Ted, her husband of 21 years, have 3 teenage daughters. Although they love to travel, Denise and her family appreciate all that the Last Frontier has to offer: fishing, wildlife, and beautiful scenery. Her spiritual gifts include teaching, discernment, and hospitality. If you’re ever in Alaska, “Camai!”* You’d be welcome to her home for hot coffee. Sit long, talk much.

*Eskimo word for a warm, genuine greeting/welcome.

600 Prayer Shawls - Let’s "git’r done!"

Mid November I received a note from Rev. Cynthia Schnaath, Assistant to the Bishop of the Central States Synod about the need for 600 prayer shawls for their convention in June 2008. She asked if I might check to see if our women might like to become involved in this project. I have already passed the request on to the board, and now share it with you, knowing that you in turn will share it with others. One of the websites that you can go to and learn more about prayer shawls is www.shawlministry.com/

I heard about prayer shawls for the first time twenty years ago, when as part of the Central States Synodical Board of Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church (W of the ELCA), I had the opportunity to attend a One in Christ speakers bureau event in the Portland, Oregon area with a focus on Native American Women. There I learned that the same shawl that provided warmth around one’s shoulders could also become the setting of an altar when draped upon a table or even upon the ground. Before heading home, I purchased a Pendleton wool throw for my parents, with the understanding that as I made my presentations, I would be using it as my prayer shawl!

The Dorcas Circle of my church, Salem, Axtell KS, sponsors an ecumenical gathering of knitters/crocheters who make 7" X 9" pieces that when 49 of them are stitched together, make a “Warm Up America” afghan. We have given Afghans to a local transition house and to Good Shepherd Mission in Kansas City. Go to www.warmupamerica.com for more information.

Many of attendees of our Hutchinson convention brought yarn, that is used for a prison ministry, as inmates fashion shawls for individuals in care homes.

If you have those extra skeins of yarn buried away in a drawer, now would be the time to dig it out and put it to good use! A trip to the local thrift shop is usually a good source for yarn! Our Warm Up America group seems to have a never ending supply.

Many of you have contacted me asking the purpose of the prayer shawls. In speaking with Pastor Schnaath, I found that attendees/guests to the Assembly will each receive a shawl and all extra prayer shawls will be going to Lutheran Campus Ministry!

Resources especially for women
Everyday Surprises: The Parables Of Jesus
The next nine-month Bible study starting in September is being offered in the Lutheran Woman Today magazine. This study makes Jesus' 2000-year-old parables a lesson for our lives today. The Bible study is written by Audrey West, an assistant professor of New Testament at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. In these studies, the writer teaches the parable and then shows how these same parable lessons can be relevant to our lives and spiritual journey today. Many of these stories are so familiar to us that we miss their surprising twists and turns. Session One - what appears in the magazine and the leaders guide - can be previewed online at www.lutheranwomantoday.org.
